Pinterest forbids all weight loss ads on diet disorders

Pinterest has announced sweeping changes in its advertising policy regarding weight loss announcements. The company quotes surprising rise in food disorders and problematic eating habits that mainly affect young people. After months of isolating socially, many people come back and socialize – and try to create a diet to lose their pandemic books.

According to Pinterest, this is the first and only “major platform” to deploy a widespread prohibition on weight loss announcements, including those that may involve images and languages, testimonials, references, from references to IMC and related metrics, some weight loss products, etc. ads that can idealize or denigrate various body types.

The updated advertising policy is rendered live on July 1, by expanding the previous policy that has already prohibited advertisements related to tablets and supplements, procedures, unrealistic claims and images before and after. The new policy will not extend to advertisements involving fitness services or healthy habits and lifestyles – assuming that they avoid weight loss content, that is to say.

Pinterest says he has updated his advertising policy with advice from the National Association of Food Disorders (NEDA), who rented the company to its general prohibition of weight loss announcements. In a statement, the provisional CEO of the Association Elizabeth Thompson said:

“The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) applauds Pinterest for taking a leadership position as the first platform to prohibit all ads with weight-loss language and imagery. NEDA is encouraged by this necessary step in prioritizing the mental health and well-being of Pinners, especially those impacted by diet culture, body shaming, and eating disorders. We are hopeful this global policy will encourage other organizations and companies to reflect on potentially harmful ad messages and to establish their own working policies that will create meaningful change.”
