Replacing vegetable oil with fish fat may be key for migraine sufferers

This study focuses on people who often suffer from migraines, a very intense and painful type of headache that can last for hours or days. This study accumulated in past studies on polyunsaturated fatty acids called linoleic acid, which most often sourced from vegetable oil, and the role possessed by migraines.
This time, this research involved 182 people who often suffer from migraines. The participants were divided into three groups, each food kit provided: one kit had a high level of fatty fish oil and linoleic acid; One has a high level of fish fat and linoleic acid; And someone has a high level of linoleic acid but the low levels of fatty fish, which reflects a typical American diet.
This food is consumed during the 16 week study period. At the beginning of the study, the average number of participant headaches experienced per month was 16, including more than five hours of pain. Groups given high food in fatty fish and low linoleat acid decreased 30 to 40 percent in how many migraines they experienced in a month, the number of hours spent experiencing ‘severe headaches,’ and the total number of hours spent with headaches in daytime.
These findings are built on evidence that increasing the number of omega-3 fatty acids in a person’s diet while reducing the number of linoleic acid may be a lifestyle intervention that is beneficial for migraine sufferers.
