Windows 11 runs on Android phones should not get your expectations
Microsoft has long come out of smartphone rat races and, save for the Surface Lone duo, it allows others to make cell phones that are then integrated with the Windows platform. It hasn’t stopped someone else from trying to make Microsoft’s old promises into reality, even without Microsoft (or potentially to Microsoft’s policy). With the announcement of Windows 11 and its original support for ARM64, it is not surprising that some active developers take the OS to the place and the Microsoft device will never approve.
Then again, the version of Windows 11 is likely to be available on raspberry pi at some point, just like Windows 10 IoT Core is the official distribution for SBC (single board computer). It is impossible to become a full-blown Windows 11 desktop shown around the web. However, what will never happen is Windows 11 which runs on the phone, especially the Android.
But that is what some hackers and developers do, bring Windows 11 to devices that have never been designed to run. In particular, Oneplus 6T and Xiaomi MI 8 have been modified to boot Windows 11 ARM64 built on this Android phone. This is based on Build Windows 11 which leaked before and could not represent the final version of the OS.
While Windows 11 does boot on this device, it doesn’t seem to work properly. The display is at least functioning and we present the touch input too. Lumia 950 XL may have a better chance to run a Windows 11 system that functions because there is already a job to get Windows 10 on it.
Of course, no one from this is the official port of Windows 11, and Microsoft practically thinks they are illegal copies. These experiments are proven, however, that does not need much for Microsoft to really make Windows 11 work on a cellphone, but that alone does not mean it will succeed in selling the device.
